Why here — the dossier
Every highlight comes from the Yard roster — nothing invented.
Band spotlight
Band founded 2005
The Soulful Sound is a reborn band, not a continuous one — the program was re-established in 2005 rather than carried unbroken from an earlier era, and the university's own 2010 press release says so plainly. It performs at homecomings, the Concerned Black Men's band showcases, Labor Day weekend parades, and campus spirit rallies. The band's home facilities include the Dudley Centre theatre and the renovated Marian Anderson Music Center. Directors before the 2005 re-establishment could not be verified from the sources opened for this profile — the pre-2005 band history is a genuine gap, not an oversight. On the music side more broadly, jazz organ legend Shirley Scott served as a Cheyney professor, and a 1990 performance of her quartet on campus survives on video.
