Band spotlight

Purple Marching Machine

Band founded 1949

The Purple Marching Machine's signature is the comeback: silent from 1975 to 1996, rebuilt by Arthur Means Jr. from 32 kids to 200 members, marched in the 76th Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade in 2002, and under Willie Snipes Jr. became ESPN's Division II Band of the Year in 2024 — a $75,000 prize — and repeated in 2025. PMM includes the 24 Karat Percussion Section drumline, marches with the Golden Stars danceline and the Steaming Flags color guard, and plays to more than 100,000 people a year.
