Why here — the dossier
Every highlight comes from the Yard roster — nothing invented.
Band spotlight
Band founded 1890
The official PVAMU history says the band has 'astonishingly been in existence for 80-plus years' with known history to WWII, when an all-female 'Co-Eds' band formed while the men were overseas. Edwards' students called him 'Prof' and his motto was 'Make It Happen!' His drumline, the McFunk B.O.X. — the BOX for short — was the first Black collegiate show-style drumline to take a full feature in the middle of a halftime show (debuted fall 1989). The Black Foxes majorette line was founded in the 1970s by Dr. Margaret Sherrod, who directed them 40+ years until retiring in 2012; their choreography blends jazz, hip-hop and ballet. Percussion professor Larry Jones has been on staff since 1976 — the sole remaining director from before the Marching Storm era. The band's greek life runs deep: Kappa Kappa Psi's Delta Psi chapter was chartered in 1966 (the first Greek chapter on campus) and Tau Beta Sigma's Epsilon Psi in 1976.
