Spelman College Glee Club
Band founded 1925
Spelman has no marching band and has had no marching band tradition — the school's varsity athletics were discontinued in 2013. The premiere performance organization is the Glee Club, founded 1925, described by the college as the oldest collegiate choir of African American women in the nation. Its annual Christmas Carol Concert with the Morehouse College Glee Club, begun in 1927, is the signature musical institution of the Atlanta University Center. Earlier Glee Club directors before Dr. Johnson could not be verified from accessible sources.
