Why here — the dossier
Every highlight comes from the Yard roster — nothing invented.
Band spotlight
Huston-Tillotson has no marching band — there is no football program — and that is the honest shape of it: this is a jazz school. The 18-piece Jazz Orchestra (Count Basie-style big band) and its smaller sibling, the Jazz Collective, are the sound of HT. The Collective started playing Friday sets on the music building's balcony, caught the ear of ACL organizers C3 Presents two blocks away, and has played Austin City Limits every year since 2022, plus the Austin Blues Festival. Competition wins include first place at the Ronald Carter HBCU Jazz Competition in Nashville and the Louis Armstrong HBCU Jazz competition (per KUTX), and third place at Lincoln Center's House of Swing. Jazz trumpeter alumnus Bobby Bradford and faculty legend James Polk root the program in real Austin jazz history.
