Why here — the dossier
Every highlight comes from the Yard roster — nothing invented.
Band spotlight
There is no marching band at Shelton State — checked the college's published music pages and found none, and the school's identity is concert-hall, not halftime. What it does have is a serious instrumental program for a two-year college: the Concert Band ('West Alabama Winds'), the largest instrumental ensemble, directed by music instructor Dr. Elijah Pugh; a traditional big-band Jazz Ensemble and a select Jazz Combo, also under Pugh; the Shelton Singers, the primary auditioned concert choir, under Dr. J.F. Mark Brown; and the Bach to Rock ensemble, a small auditioned group performing spirituals, gospel, jazz, pop, R&B, and musical theatre that the Arts Council of Tuscaloosa calls its most requested educational program. The Shelton Singers toured from Hawaii to New York and played Carnegie Hall six times under longtime director Pat Blackshear, who retired in 2016 after 31 years.
