Band spotlight

Fisk Jubilee Singers

Band founded 1871

Fisk has no marching band and never really needed one: its musical identity is the a cappella Fisk Jubilee Singers, the oldest continuously performing vocal group in America and the ensemble that invented the concert spiritual. They won a Grammy in 2021, 150 years after they sang to save the school. Today the group is made up of current Fisk students chosen by audition, carrying a repertoire first performed by young people who had been born enslaved.
